Homework Help - Create a Great Homework Space

In our house, the kitchen table serves as the central task. Whether your child completes his homework in a common area or secluded in his room, it is vital to create a special space for this important activity.

What makes a great homework space?

Adequate space - Textbooks, notebooks and supplies take up much space. Make sure each child has enough space to comfortably complete their activities. Kitchen tables are large areas of study for this reason. Desktop smaller bedroom can not provide enough space for all the materials needed.

Quiet - This is so important. I used to try to see the evening news (on TV kitchenette), while I was preparing dinner and my children competed tasks. I am always surprised when they had questions about the news I just heard too. It was really a distraction. Homework time is much more effective now that it's quiet.

Supplies - Each of my children is a "homework box", one of those plastic pencil boxes probably purchased for back to school. Each has its own supply of pens, pencils, crayons and white output that stays in his room and brought the kitchen table at the time of the task. Extra paper, rulers, a stapler and pencil sharpener are stored in a closet near the kitchen table. No more searching for supplies!

Lighting - Inadequate lighting in the study area your child can make the task more difficult than it should be. The chandelier over the kitchen table can not provide enough light to read and write (mine certainly does not). Usually task lighting is necessary in the performance of tasks requiring visual concentration. Task lighting provides focused light, and ambient light provided by a chandelier. In our house, a desk lamp on the kitchen table reduces eye strain.

Let the children choose - Let your children choose special pencils, storage boxes and folders for schoolwork. We have special Star Wars pencils only for schoolwork. These little things make a big difference for children.

There is simply no substitute for parental involvement in children's activities the task. If parents treat homework as an important daily activity, children will be treated as such.

What are your suggestions for favorite time job? I'd love to hear from you!
